A.F.T. presents to Anime Revolution a new kind of foam sword event. This is not your typical real-time kind of fighting.
The Foam Sword Duels tests your luck and reactions with a rock-paper-scissors (RPS) type of system: slash, strike, and pierce (SSP). There are three phases to each duel relating to a different element: luck, reaction, and then battle.
The panel is based around a 13 point system where a point is rewarded for each successful "hit". The time limit for each battle will be anywhere between 3-5 minutes. Players are supplied with a foam sword and a shield before the battle begins. Pictures will be supplied at a later date as examples of what the event will look like.
Luck
In Phase 1:Luck, you and your opponent face off in a match of Slash, Strike, Pierce. Just like RPS, SSP has a different action for each move.
Slash, just like the hands on a clock the sword will be positioned at 3:45 or a horizontal line.
Strong against pierce, weak against strike.
Strike, the sword will be positioned at 6:00 or a vertical line.
Strong against slash, weak against pierce.
Pierce, the sword is pointing straight at your opponent.
Strong against strike, weak against slash.
Reaction
Once a winner has been determind, the Phase 2:Reaction begins right away. To prepare their attack, the winner must quickly draw their sword downwards to ready their attack. The loser has a chance to redeem themselves by raising their shield before the winner readies their sword. If the loser wins, the attack will be successfully blocked and the two return to Phase 1:Luck. However, if the winner succeeds in preparing their attack first, Phase 3: Battle will begin.
Battle
It is called battle but really it is the winner's chance to show us their moves. In this phase, the attacker can do just a regular "hit" on their opponent OR they can choose to create a huge theatrical attack with any fancy moves or even just put down their victim. Of course keep this all PG-13. Once the attack is finished, we move back to Phase 1.
Phase X
This phase is special in which it can happen at any time. If either one of the duelist makes a mistake in judgement, (eg. attacking when they should be defending) Phase X immediately begins. The person who makes a mistake is given two choices, deal a "hit" to their self and lose a point or allow their opponent the opportunity to land an attack on them. When the phase is over, Phase 1: Luck begins.
When the time has expired or when a player has reached 13 points (tentative amount), the winner is given a chance to do one final attack to finish off their opponent. What it is you do is completely up to you.
Now that we've finished with the basic rundown of the tournament. Here are the rules and general info that you'll need to know.
Cosplaying
This is a cosplay event so even if you may not fight in character, it would be fantastic if you did wear a cosplay if you are participating. It does not matter whether or not this particular character has a sword or not, this just gives the audience a name to cheer during your match. This is a PG-13 event so please try not to wear anything too revealing or has the potential of having a wardrobe malfunction. You will be moving around plenty so try to refrain from wearing heavy or thick clothing. If we do not approve of your cosplay, we will not allow it.
Skirts, wear shorts underneath.
Open shirt cosplays will not be allowed.
Here's the kicker, there will be two competitions happening on separate days. One for people who sign-up before the con, and another for people who sign up at the convention. Competitors who sign up before the con will be competing for a one of a kind prize which will be revealed at a later date.
This information will be updated over the next few months, so make sure you check back in periodically.
