It has only become that way due to the Otaku killings, and if we want to bring light to the negative aspect of that word then we can easily make references to it's dark nature.
Or, we can use the well known "obessor" term and work with it.

I personally find that the term is overused, but if anyone can find a better term...im in hahaha :)

Technically, yes, but even people in Japan are using that word much more frequently and in a much more lighter sense now. It's almost like one of those words/terms in which you use to jokingly insult your friends. (e.g. **Highlight to see since I'm not really keen on using.... impolite terms.**Asshole, Bastard, Dumbass, etc)

It's only a insult in Japan in North America it's connected to being a anime fan.

I think that term is pretty much a joke now...it's like calling your friend an idiot. Or a retard.
We don't mean any harm to our friends...or to anyone else related.
